Why does the sun shine directly over the equator twice every year?

i'm not sure i understand: sunlight shines the most on the equator & if it shines more at certain times of the year it can only have something to do with the tilt of the earth, the position the earth is from the sun and how much of the tilt is exposed to the sun at any one given time at that stage in the year!
